02Install on headphones

Before you start

  • A desktop Chromium browser such as Chrome or Edge, or another one with Bluetooth serial support (supported browsers). Firefox and Safari can't do it.
  • Headphones paired with this computer in its Bluetooth settings, and disconnected from your phone.
  • Battery at least 50%. It stops on its own below that.
  • In the Sony Headphones Connect app, set Automatic Power Off to Do not turn off, so they don't switch off mid-install.

Install

  1. Click Control channel, then Update channel; choose WH-1000XM4 each time.
  2. Optional: Check tests without installing.
  3. Install takes about 15 minutes. Keep the headphones nearby.
  4. They switch off when done. When the light stops blinking, turn them on.
Troubleshooting and undo
The picker doesn't list the headphones
Pair them with this computer first (system Bluetooth settings), make sure they're connected, then click the button again.
It stops with an error
The pack is only installed at the very end, after the headphones have verified it, so an error before that leaves your current prompts in place. Reconnect both channels and try again.
The headphones don't turn back on
Wait a minute, then hold the power button for 2 seconds. If nothing happens, plug in the charging cable for a few minutes and try again.
Undo: go back to Sony's prompts
Connect both channels, then installs Sony's unmodified pack the same way.
